Not calling people out -- asking them to step up.

The HelpEarth Foundation was launched after the world recover from the BoxerDay Tsunami and realized that we need to come together before disaster strikes ~sound fimilar!  So when  efforts like Crisis Commons - CrisisCamps and Random Hacks of Kindness --RHoKs  started piping up we readily join in.

The very first RHok we attended was in Microsoft's FriendshipHeights.net location where they, google, world bank and local socialpreners all came together to Hack for Good.  Here's a snip

That was 2010 and now today the last hackathon for good that happen local led was back in December of 2013 and it was not for lack of effort. It was support that was needed and to match the enthusiasm that is already being generated for RHoKDC.com it would be shame to miss the chance to come together and do Random Hacks of Kindness.

Join RHoKDC.com as challenger, hacker or sponsor all are welcome.

Random Hacks of Kindness is coming to DC #RHoKDC1215

The best thing about the web is that it's random and when adding hacking for kindness to random acts one gets' Random Hacks of Kindness and way back in June of 2010 one of the first global gathers of coders, hackers, programmers and the community at large came together and worked to make the world a better place.

Photo of the sign in the Microsoft FriendshipHeights.net location
Since that time large companies like Nike have come to RHoK to help it get a grasp on this emerging world of Social Media Citizens and show that it too cares about doing good too of course the small groups of even nations that have sought the skills that RHoKstars have in adbandance.

We've even hadPublic Schools like Alice Deal Middle School in Washington, DC. that hosted the Dec 2013 RHoKDC that ended up producing two different challenge one to handle the AV items in the school and an HTML5 application for the parents and students www.admsapp.com

From 2013-12-08

What's in store this upcoming RHoKDC1215??????

It's up to the community to come to us via this amazing process and let the coders, hackers and programmers that make up the heart of RHoK (please go register) know what challenges that they face and we all then work to make something if not random happen for the good of all.

We've setup a small GoFundMe campaign to help with the cost of food and swag for the participates and of course we're looking for sponsors and partners... all of which can be signed up for on the website RHoKDC.com

Need to fund forest fires battles with emergency funds not working budget

Talking with a Forest Fighter, fellow elementary school dad,  I was shocked to learn that the forest fires engulfing the USA aren't running out of emergency funds, the fire cost are taken directly from the Firefighters overall working budget.

The Asymmetric risk this places the USA and it's citizens is catastrophic and not sure we even need a graphic for it.   Wired has very good description of the issue

The agency’s total firefighting budget is around $2.52 billion, which is basically broken up into two piles. The first pile is $1.14 billion for preparedness, which involves all the agency’s pre-fire season preparation, hiring, and training. The other pile is $708 million for suppression. This is all the frontline firefighting, and pays for hand crews, smoke jumpers, engines, air tankers, helicopters, incident management teams, and so on. (Okay smarty, I know that doesn’t add up to $2.5 billion. There are two smaller piles—$303 and $362 million respectively—that deal with prevention planning and the removal of grass, brush, and other potential fuel sources.)
Active Fire Mapping Program

From the United States Department of Agriculture report  "FIRE TRANSFER IMPACT STATE* a state by state breakdown in the withering of the of these services;  Because of cuts to the overall budget from Congress and then fires burning the remainder through LIKE A FIRE. Today the USA faces a dramatic risk from fires and displacement which could include the need to relocate large populations.  So doing noting is not now only immoral it's placing the US at risk.

" their footnote on the main title slide said it all --Impacts reported by Forest Service Regions. These do not include Region-wide impacts that occur in multiple states, nor national-level impacts. This list may not include all impacts—those that were realized later or those not reported by the Region."

What needs to be talked about is the solution.  The HEF and most leaders in the field of emergency management concur this needs to be address sooner than laters.

CyclonePam hits Vanuatu and here's how help started and what you can do now

The first inkling of potential impact of CyclonePam on the tiny island of Vanuatu came in from a tweet sent out from the RescueTaskForce Twitter feed on March 12th  just before 10 pm EST.

And we know right way that by morning in the States the deviation would be tremendous. That night going to bed hoping for the best as you can see it's no match for a Cyclone let alone the previous Earth Quake and Volcano eruption hit this tiny island nation . LINK

The damage has been something that has been accumulating to the point that this nation is now not capitalizable of sustaining themselves and the best and the brightest minds in the world are needed to help them not only survive this BlackSwan event they'll need to prepare for more if they're to stay there for any long period of time.

Meanwhile the Digital Humanitarian Network as happens in many disasters goes into the Activation mode over the weekend and members like Humanity Road and StandByTaskeForce are able to update the over all group on any actions, plans or communications that they may be privy to or leading as is often the case.

As well as DHN monitoring the situation again individual members are participating in many aspects of response and recovery including some very nimble MicroMapping from Patrick Meier's group. MicroMappers.org which anyone can signup and learn to become a Digital Jedi.

Help Earth Foundation will be updating this blog with information about a couple of groups that we've noticed to be doing some Crowd backed response to this ongoing and disaster for the people of the impacted areas. (March 19th, 12:09 EST)
